If you are ready to go out and party like you used to and aren’t afraid of the spotlight, then the recently unveiled spring/summer collection by contemporary Nigerian brand Mazelle Studio has been made with you in mind, as the unofficial occasionwear for the famed “Owambe” parties, extravagant soirées and gatherings that take place every weekend in Nigeria, from weddings and birthday celebrations to pool parties and beach barbecues.
Titled “Ile Faaji”, which, translated from the Yoruba language, literally means “house of enjoyment”, the collection is a perfect blend of traditional sensibilities with contemporary flair. The bright colors, voluminous silhouettes and maximalist designs of the collection are a direct representation of the exuberance and liveliness of the parties to which the pieces will be worn.
Mazelle Studio is known for its inventive use of traditional adire fabric, a hand-dyed cloth that comes in an array of colors, fashioning it into new shapes and textures, including quilted skirts, dresses with shirred bodices, and watercolor-style patterns. The collection is comprised of tops, pants, jackets, coats and dresses of various lengths and proportions but the common line that runs through each piece is an explosion of color. Featuring bright oranges, searing pinks, flashy yellows and cool blues, the pieces are sure to add a vibrant flavor to your wardrobe.
Founder and creative director Mariam Afolabi, describes the Mazelle woman as “someone who isn’t afraid to be different, be the center of attention and not afraid to take up space”, adding that “when you wear a Mazelle piece, I want you to feel important, different, bold, edgy and powerful.” With the “Ile Faaji” collection, the mission is definitely accomplished.
