By now, you're familiar with Burna Boy, WizKid, and Mr. Eazi--the Afrobeats artists adding continental flare to the music charts. Last year, Joeboy emerged as yet another promising act out of Nigeria. Taking hints from his predecessors, the 22-year old has developed a sound that is as appropriate for house parties as it is quiet date nights.
Joeboy officially “popped” 2019 when his song “Baby” became a smash hit in Nigeria, reaching the Top 10 on the Apple Music chart locally as well as in Kenya, and Uganda. His second official single, “Beginning” was released a few months later and reached number 1 on the Apple Music Chart in Uganda and Nigeria.
In early 2017, his rendition of the Ed Sheeran tune “Shape of You” helped him gain a notable following on Instagram. The clip caught the attention of Mr. Eazi who since helped him develop his voice beginning with participation in the legendary artist’s “incubator program” Empawa Africa, a program the music icon created to help African artists develop and present their music to Africa and beyond. While in the program he was selected as one of their Top 10 artists. This gave him the chance to finance his music video “Faaji”. The video has amassed over 500,000 views on Youtube.
He released his debut E.P. entitled “Love & Light” last fall to positive reviews. With only 5 songs, it invites users inside the mind of a young man who wants to spread love in a world that so desperately needs it.
